Audio Book Contractor’s Incorporated is an organization that is committed to the recording of unabridged classic novels, children’s books, poetry, plays and collections of short stories for use by the general public as well as for schools and libraries.
Flo Gibson started the company in 1983. After a successful career that ranged from radio drama to service with the USO to recording books with organizations such as Recorded Books, Books On Tape and the Library of Congress, Flo came to realize that few recording companies were including the classics in their catalogues. Realizing the importance of preserving such works for the listening public, she created her own company, Audio Book Contractors, Inc. Utilizing the services of audio expert Bill West from the Library of Congress, Flo had a soundproof booth and recording equipment installed in her basement in Washington, DC. She then employed local talent to help her in the recording, monitoring, packaging and distribution of all varieties of classic books on cassettes. Some of these early employees, such as Grover Gardner, Mary Woods and John MacDonald, have gone on to continue their careers with great success in the recorded book industry and related fields.
In later years, Audio Book Contractors, Inc. began to convert selected works to compact discs and its collection of titles in this format is even now steadily increasing in size. A few years later, the company joined into a partnership with Audible.com, one of the world’s largest audio downloading websites. Through this latest collaboration, we hope to bring the joy of these classic books to whole new generations of listeners.
With the inception of this organization, Flo has set off a journey of love that has continued to this day. Audio Book Contractors, Inc. has brought more than 900 unabridged versions of literature’s finest works to the listening public.
