Listener Reviews

All the elements that made this Gothic tale so popular when it was first published in 1794. Gibson, a seasoned performer, does a masterful job of reading, sustaining interest throughout the lengthy novel…She reads at a lively pace and effectively uses pauses and change in intonation to heighten the sense of mystery, intrigue, and terror which Radcliffe so freely intertwines with romance. This title was a "must read'' 200 years ago, and Gibson's audio presentation is a "must listen'' today for those who love Gothic novels and especially for fans of Jane Austen (Austen has heroine Catherine Moreland reading The Mysteries of Udolpho in Northanger Abbey (1818), which is a burlesque of the popular 18th century Gothic novel.)
